Are you looking for some fun things to
do with your kids on rainy days? Here are a few suggestions.
-Scavenger hunt for items around the
house. It doesn't have to be anything major, just stuff like candies
or decorations or toys. Anything whose absence will be noticed will
do.
-Put on a play using dolls/action
figures/stuffed animals, etc. We used to use shoeboxes and Legos to
create 'sets' for our My Little Ponies to act out scenes from our
favorite TV shows. Most of the time we would just do them for
ourselves, but it might also be fun for your kids to come up with
skits to act out for you.
-Family game night, particularly a game
made up by the kids
-Charades or Pictionary, even if you
can't act or draw your way out of a paper bag. In fact, that makes
the game that much more fun!
-Make a simple but yummy snack or
treat. Cookies, Rice Crispie treats, cupcakes-anything that is easy
to make, easy to decorate and fun to eat!
-If you have girls, play 'beauty
parlor', doing each other's hair and makeup. My sister and I used to
do this when we were younger and it was a lot of fun. Heck, sometimes
boys might get a kick out of this if you let them do your hair in
really weird ways.
-On the same tip as above, do each
other's nails. It might even be fun to come up with your own 'nail
art' designs-stripes, spots, swirls, words, whatever you want. Just
make sure you have nail polish remover handy!
-If you have old makeup and/or nail
polish that you don't use anymore, use them as art supplies. I used
to take my old makeup and apply it to a 'canvas' of paper using the
same tools I would use on my face. Using eye shadow applicators and
lip/eye pencils gives you a lot of control over what sorts of shapes
you draw, although I usually preferred doing abstracts. If you're
worried about the makeup staining things, blot it with a cloth or
paper towel before displaying it.
-Make crafts using things you would
normally throw away. Boxes, bottles, egg crates, cardboard scraps,
construction paper, labels...all of these things can be added to the
usual glue-and-markers to make fun and interesting crafts. Best of
all, you don't have to buy anything new and can recycle most things
later on!
-To combine the crafts with the
scavenger hunt, it might be fun for the items you hide to be pieces
they have to collect to make a larger 'whole'. For instance, for a
model airplane, hide the wheels in one place, the wings in another,
the cabin and the decals and all of the parts of the plane needed to
make the model. A lot of toy and science-themed stores will sell
cardboard or wooden models of animals or dinosaur skeletons that have
to be put together in a particular order; hide things in the house
and send them on a different 'search' for each section.
-If it is warm and there's no
lightning, get into bathing suits and play a nice game of kickball in
the yard. Either that, or fight with water balloons and squirt guns.
Since it's already raining out, you don't have to worry about getting
too dirty and have a great way to cool off in the summer.
